Protea flowers Platter with delft fynbos

£65.00

A large slab rolled, porcelain platter decorated with protea flowers in coloured porcelain slip and refined with sgraffito* technique. Fynbos flowers have been added in blue underglaze as background.

Inspiration for this design comes from walking fynbos routes in the Overberg region, Western Cape, South Africa where my family resides. Proteas can reach a height of over 2 meters creating extraordinary flowery forest like scenery.

Glaze is dinnerware and dishwasher safe although handmade ceramics prefer a hand wash. All my materials are lead free. Glazed on inside and outer rim.

Size: 30cm Diameter (Approx 11.8 inches) , 2cm Height (Approx 0.8 inches)

*Sgraffito is a technique used in pottery and other art forms where a layer of slip (liquid clay) or glaze is applied to the surface of a clay object, and then a design or image is scratched through the layer to reveal the contrasting color of the clay body beneath. The term "sgraffito" comes from the Italian word "sgraffiare," which means "to scratch."

**Fynbos (/ˈfeɪnbɒs/; Afrikaans pronunciation: [ˈfɛinbos] meaning fine-leaved plants) is a small belt of natural shrubland or heathland vegetation located in the Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces of South Africa.
